Codeine Phosphate 30mg – Quick Overview
What is it?
Codeine Phosphate is an opioid painkiller used to relieve moderate to severe pain when other pain relievers (like paracetamol or ibuprofen) aren’t effective. It also helps with dry cough and diarrhea in some cases.
How does it work?
It acts on the central nervous system (CNS), blocking pain signals from reaching the brain and reducing the emotional response to pain. Codeine is derived from the poppy plant.

Pain from injuries, surgery, or long-term illness
Dry, persistent cough
Diarrhea (non-infectious)
Not usually recommended for chronic pain.
Who can take it?
Adults and teens (12+) if other painkillers don’t work
Not for children under 12 due to risk of serious side effects
Elderly may require lower doses
How to take it:
Adults: 30–60mg every 4–6 hours (max 240mg/day)
Cough: 15–30mg 3–4x daily
Diarrhea: 15–60mg 3–4x daily
Take orally, with or without food
Side effects:
Common:
Constipation, dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, skin rash
Serious (seek medical help):
Breathing problems, allergic reactions, vision changes, trouble urinating, irregular heartbeat
Precautions:
Do not mix with alcohol
Avoid if you have breathing issues, head injuries, seizures, liver/kidney problems, or addiction history
Not recommended for long-term use or more than 3 days without doctor guidance
Pregnancy & breastfeeding:
Use in pregnancy only if advised by a doctor
Avoid during breastfeeding, as codeine can affect the baby
Storage:
Keep in a cool, dry place below 25°C
Away from kids, heat, light, and moisture
