How it works:
Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that has anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and amnestic effects by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.
Dosage: As prescribed by a doctor.
Side Effects:
CNS: Confusion, depression, headache, slurred speech, tremor, vertigo
GI: Constipation, nausea
Special Senses: Blurred vision, dizziness
CVS: Hypotension
Psychiatric: Agitation, hallucinations, anxiety, insomnia, rage, and other adverse behavioral effects. More common in children and the elderly.
Drug Interactions:
Opioids, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, alcohol, antacids, anticonvulsants, barbiturates, MAO inhibitors, narcotics, and others.
Indication: Used for managing anxiety disorders or short-term relief of anxiety symptoms.
When Not to Use:
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to diazepam, myasthenia gravis, severe respiratory insufficiency, severe hepatic insufficiency, sleep apnea, and acute narrow-angle glaucoma.
Precautions:
Caution in patients with depression or suicidal tendencies.
Warnings:
Benzodiazepines + opioids: Risk of profound sedation, respiratory depression, and death.
Advise against driving or operating machinery when combined with opioids.
Not for use in psychotic patients or as an alternative to appropriate treatment.
Pregnancy Category: Consult your doctor before use.
Storage: Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat.
